Enrica Mosciaro – the architect who designed the hotel – wished to bestow a modern, functional and at the same time welcoming image to the building thanks to the careful and sensible choice of materials that constitute it.
With the overlap of the two volumes, the hotel is configured as a combination of two buildings, divided almost without “touching” by the long and slender strip of glass.
The compact and light upper parallelepiped, which houses the rooms, seems to “float” on the base and its articulation matches its functional complexity: in particular its suggestive facade is carefully prepared in order to satisfy lighting and environmental needs. The external portion is constituted by an extended jalousie shutter, which can be completely opened from the inside of the room balconies, and made of phenolic panels cut as large planks and mixed in order to simulate the colour and appearance of wood in three tones: light and dark oak and chestnut.
This results in an extraordinary texture that gives the facade a natural feeling. The lower building is characterized by an impressive play of glass windows, doors and chromatic volumes that reveal the inside spaces on the ground floor, the public and meeting spaces embellished with furnishings by designers such as Gonzalo Milà, Lievore Altherr Molina, Andres Bluth, Miguel Milà and Patricia Urquiola.
Description
Hotels have two souls: a public one, which presents the dynamic of the arriving and departing zones, brings the idea of encounter, activity and leisure; and an intimate and protected one, designed for the night and the rest.
The Hotel Mod05 is the overlap of two buildings, divided without touching each other by a large stripe of glass. The compact but light volume of the rooms floats above the complex and articulated ground floor.
The ground floor builds itself around a glassy central space which brings together different functions: The reception, the office, the bar, the restaurant, the meeting room and the kitchen.
The hall develops around these volumes always allowing the exterior and the sky to be viewed.
The matter strength of the volumes is highlighted by the treatment of the surface, the continuity of the finishing and the contrast of colors between the interior and the exterior.
The volume where the rooms are placed dematerializes: a second wooden facade allows the light to be modulated into the interior of the rooms, selecting the view and regulating the solar flow during the different seasons of the year.
At the hotel changes take place, in every room, every hour of the day, at every moment.
A living “facade” brings harmony to the building which lives in tune with the building’s inhabitants.
