The XXII National Conference SIU

This year The Italian Planner Community had the honor of welcoming the international conference lead by Nicola Martinelli which examined the topic of landscape establishment. In particular, the participants of the conference focused their attention on the possible contribution that planning project can make to landscape.

The useful public strategies of how to keep down “making profit of landscape resources” are being discussed quite frequently pointing out the aspects such as unity, complexity and appropriateness of new area, the integral vision of the area during the planning process, its protection, organization and running.

The basic and primary step for a landscape architect is to find an appropriate area for investment of the landscape project as well as to understand which area could serve for landscape project.

Landscape project has to focus its attention no longer on the landscapes of high aesthetic value, but it has to do it on rather downgraded and shabby areas that are found throughout Italy, on “the early traces of modern planning”.

The evaluation of the landscape means pointing out the peripheral urbanity, rather unstable and contradictory area that can be explored by the means of a new natural anthropological dimension: this area should be explored by architects only.

Also the professor Pierre Donadieu from la Ecole Nationale Supérieure du Paysage de Versailles participated at the conference explaining to the audience his visionary of the future for landscapists, introducing the critical reading on the history and development of the craftsmanship from first being seen as “gardeners” and then “mediators, interpreters of the surrounding social and physical environment.”

Donadieu stated that the subject area of landscape studies is in a crisis due to the lack of knowledge of the study area itself as well as incomplete understanding of concepts, rules and principles related to it. The practical concepts of landscaping should be improved, identifying the major activities that could clarify ambiguities of suburban areas.

Besides it, landscapists should also concentrate their attention on some new science areas such as geographical culture, landscape ecology, geoarcheology, city planning, green urbanism, urban design and new urbanism. In order to define a landscape it is worth of quoting Rosario Assunto and his “aesthetic picture of human live”. According to Assunto landscape designer at the beginning of ‘900 was “a poet and painter whose creations were aimed at visual and spiritual satisfaction”.

The European Landscape Convention requires landscape architect’s communication and negotiation, in order to achieve the correlation of political, territorial and social projects. So from now on a landscapist is no longer just a gardener, but rather an interpreter of environmental surroundings.

Thus his main goal is to merge a dream and reality with a help of the projects that are concentrated on the development of ambiguous areas. The importance of the projects could be achieved by dedicating more attention and making constant changes in them.

Donadieu introduced a multi- directional, creative, modern, reflexive, complex, multi-faceted and multi-cultural project that could be highly evaluated not only by future users and inhabitants of that area, but also by people from surrounding areas. In particular we, architects, planner, landscapists and restorers are to undertake the task of reading, correcting, dreaming, communicating, and sharing as well as living “the life” of the landscape itself.

However, it is still not clear if we also manage to find time to awake the growth of both visual as well as spiritual admiration through landscape designing.
