Throughout the "Salone del Mobile 2004", Virtualgallery.it, the photography, architecture and design web portal, will exhibit the cultural project entitled GREEN ISLAND. Piazze, isole e verde pubblico, an urban art, photography, architecture and design project. The artists are to create an image on the theme of URBAN GREEN SPACES: squares, streets, lawns, stations, rest areas, temporary green in the modern metropolis.

The drawings, renderings and photographs of the artists will be blown up to poster size so as to be legible from within the urban environment, posted in crowded areas such as stations: in particular around VIA PEPE near Porta Garibaldi, an area seen as the new Brera district, renown meeting place for creative young artists and designers. In the 2003 "Salone", the internationally known art director Christoph Radl defined the area as "the new design district". Several of the most interesting and innovative contemporary design movements have chosen to move their headquarters to the neighbourhood.

For this reason, we feel that having already been a step ahead by identifying the zone around the Isola neighbourhood - which is in close connection to that of Porta Genova (Savona area) - we may continue to build on the project started in 2003 with the "Dal cucchiaio alla cittā - 040 all'Isola" event.

Among the many artists presented for the project, there are several of the great masters of design both from Italy and around the world: Ettore Sottssas, Aldo Rossi, Andrea  Branzi, Boris Podrecca, Toyo Ito; the inventions of Futur System, and the recently opened architectural studios such as the A12 group, Studio EU, ma0,  Marco Romanelli, StalkAgency, 2A+P with nicole_fvr; and the photographs of artists who know how to deal with the theme of urban green space, like Francesco Jodice,  Marco Introini, Silvio Wolf, Cesare Colombo, Alessandra Spranzi, Francesco Zucchetti and Luigi Ghirri.

2004 is also the centenary of the birth of Terragni, the master of rationalist architecture, who, in the Porta Garibaldi neighbourhood itself, projected some of his most interesting architectural works in Milan. We would like to pay a special tribute to him with a specially created series of photographs taken by Paolo Rosselli, together with a number of images by Maria Mulas and Francesco Radino.

The event will take place in Via Pepe, in the Isola neighbouhood within the Porta Garibaldi area. The shops, arts and crafts workshops, design and architecture studios of the area will be involved. There will be live music in the streets, and cocktails on platform 20 of Garibaldi Station.
