A couple of s Italo-Israel architects formed at the Columbia University, an enlightened contractor and an exotic place. These are the main ingredients of this work. some hundreds meters far from the canteen "Octospider" which throw them under the international media's attention, stands the new company building ZIG ZAG made of Schle Woodthanan, a contractor man out of the common run who, as some architects themselves state, has the quality of work environment at heart as the basis of a big company is the employs' wellness. Exposure Architects, it is how Oliviero Godi and Dorit Mizrahi, also pair in life, love to be named, seems to move at one's easy in a contest and culture really different from ours. The new building ZIG ZAG rises from a large attention to work. Although it is an industrial architecture, the building exhales something poetic. By few and simple materials used in unusual way, this architecture so apparently alien originates from nature shapes; as in Octospider the pilotis are made in bamboo, here two huge half-opened lotus keep a secret garden which sheds light and harmony on inside. As in Octospider this architecture originates from water, but instead of shed light on landscape it withdraws into itself, obviously this is to support better the functional difference and meet the work idea of the oriental culture. The shirt and sheet factory ZIG ZAG is a worth structure as it is capable to show how to create fascinating buildings without exaggerated costs that unfortunately the modern architecture accustomed us up to now .
Gianluigi D'Angelo - Channelbeta
In developing the design for the sewing
factory we have taken into consideration the following elements:
1. the sequence of the programs for a sewing factory
2. the need of flexibility and expandability
3. the necessity to create a working environment at a human scale for the people sitting many hours at the sewing machine
4. a design that would be unique, but still structurally feasible and efficient, to reduce the construction costs
5. The customer's suggestion for a building with a central court.
We therefore started from the idea of the central court and we stretched it to make it become like a cloister, taking the idea from medieval cloister in Europe.
The cloister is a place of meditation, relaxation, inspiration and removal from the outer world. To preserve such atmosphere, we separated, like in medieval religious complex, the programs in such a way that only the people at the sewing machines will be in the cloister, while all the other programs will be located in a long bar (the service bar) that will also extend in the future to allow for further expansion.
Regarding the structure, it follows the basic scheme of concrete columns and steel trusses, never more than 24 mts wide, to control construction costs.
The roof of the cloister is inclined toward one corner but the roof itself is on a single plane, making it simple to build.
We decided to consider two cloister based on the fact that it is important to preserve the relationship between thedepth and height of the cloister, which is at the base of the special atmosphere of the cloister itself, which would be ruined by making it larger to accommodate more sewing machine.
In fact even in medieval complexes they tended to have several cloister rather than expanding an existing one.
